HACBED TOCBD Plan for Three Urban Communities

Project Description:

The University of Hawaii (UH), with its community partner, the Hawaii Alliance for Community-Based Economic Development (HACBED), conducted the Transit Oriented Community Based Development Project (TOCBD) to study and assist urban core communities in transition that would be most disrupted by development, particularly transit-oriented projects, that comes to these communities. Businesses and families will be displaced, and cultural and physical histories will be in danger of being destroyed and forgotten.

To prevent these scenarios and to ensure the best of these communities would be preserved and enhanced with the opportunities that transit or any other development could bring to those who call these neighborhoods �home,� the Project team was involved in a wide range of tasks, including researching previous plans and studies and contacting area businesses and residents. Environet also conducted surveys to develop and explore broad-based �grassroots� planning models to assist the three selected urban neighborhoods � Central Kakaako, Ala Moana-Sheridan-Kaheka, & McCully-Moiliili � in:
